　　Measure and mark the layout: Determine where the fence will go and mark it with stakes at each corner. Stretch a string between the stakes to ensure your layout is straight and follow this as a guide.

　　Mark post locations: Place a post every 4 to 10 feet, depending on local rules and fence height. Use the measuring tape to mark each spot along the string line.

　　Step 2: Digging Post Holes

　　Dig holes for anchor corners and end posts: to secure them with greater stability than line posts. Use a post hole digger to dig holes. They should be 18 to 24 inches deep and about 8 inches wide. In cold climates, dig deeper to prevent frost heave.

　　Prepare for line posts: Line posts must have smaller holes, about 18 inches deep and 6 inches wide.
